The Autumn Field Look: Tweed Vest and Barn Coat

A tweed vest and barn coat is my go-to answer when women joining us for a Blixt Sporting Day or a driven shoot ask me the question I hear most: “What do I wear?” So I filmed myself getting ready, one layer at a time.

The look is built on tradition: tweed, a checked shirt and a sporting tie, softened with a well-worn barn coat, jeans and boots. It’s smart enough for the gun line, comfortable enough for a long day outdoors, and relaxed enough for lunch at the lodge.

Building the Look, Layer by Layer

  • The tweed vest. This is the heart of the outfit. Mine is custom tailored by Leonard Logsdail, and a well-cut vest keeps your core warm while leaving your arms free to mount the gun. If custom isn’t on the cards, Holland Cooper and Ralph Lauren both make beautiful ready-to-wear versions.
  • Gingham and a sporting tie. A small green check pairs with almost any tweed. My pheasant tie from High Cotton is a nod to the day ahead and a little wink of personality.
  • Jeans and boots. Keeping it American. Bootcut denim and a western boot, like the Sadie from Tecovas, make the look feel at home in Teton Valley.
  • The barn coat. The final layer for cool mornings on the peg. I found mine at Womenfolk, and the classic J.Crew barn jacket is a great alternative. It’s soft and practical, and it only gets better with wear.

Why a Tweed Vest and Barn Coat Work in the Field

On a driven day, what you wear is about more than style. Natural, muted tones matter, because bright colors can flare the birds. Layers let you adjust as the morning warms up, and a vest gives you freedom of movement through the swing. Pairing a tweed vest and barn coat with denim keeps the tradition of the British shooting field while feeling relaxed and distinctly Western.
